| La Coruña, like most Galician cities, celebrates Carnival in a very special way. The floats are mixed with the popular “entroido” in the busy streets. The “choqueiros”, people dressed in any old thing they find at home, are the true admirers of this popular carnival.
The spectacular parades of floats pass along the wide avenues of the city, though undoubtedly the great carnival day is the eve of Ash Wednesday in calle de La Torre, where thousands of people from the city parade in fancy dress.
During the Fiestas de María Pita, there is not a single day when there are not several events in some part of the city. Between a multitude of concerts and cultural activities, we can enjoy the Medieval Market, in which for a few days the Old City returns to its splendour of yesteryear; the Naval Battle, the remembrance of the English attack in 1589 and the Battle of the Flowers, parades of floats to end the show with a great firework display over Orzán beach.
On the eve of Saint John, the shortest night in the year, like in most Spanish cities there are bonfires around the city, and probably the multitude of bonfires in Riazor and Orzán beaches are the most spectacular thing about the night. |
