| Cadiz is maybe the Spanish carnival that has the most amusing, merry image due to its ‘chirigotas’, songs composed for the event with a touch of irony and sarcasm. The origins of this carnival are fairly curious, as it dates back to the 16th century when Cadiz was one of the most important ports in the Spanish empire and received influences from all around the world. It was especially influenced by Venice, a city with which it shared many commercial links, from where some of the traditions were copied and have evolved and made the Cadiz carnival one of those with most character.
The whole city is involved in the carnival, and especially on Holy Thursday, and if you have never been to the city, this is a good time to do so and enjoy the fun of the chirigotas and everything the people have to offer. If you already know the city, you won’t need much to convince you of how much it is worth getting away to Andalusia at this time. |
